When Cool Air Fades: Real A/C Repair Story in Los Angeles

At Buildingheroes LLC, we often meet air conditioners that just need a little attention — and this week’s service call in Koreatown, Los Angeles was a perfect example.

Our customer, reached out because her two A/C systems weren’t cooling properly. One unit served the dining room, and the other was located behind the kitchen.

🔍 Step 1: Full System Inspection

When we arrived, both units were tested carefully.

  • The dining room unit (#1) had a major refrigerant loss, while

  • The kitchen unit (#2) had only a slight shortage of refrigerant.

We ran a leak detection test and found that the #1 unit had one confirmed leak point. Our technician Brian repaired that section and rechecked it with an electronic leak detector to make sure it was sealed tight.

⚙️ Step 2: Recharge and Pressure Adjustment

For the dining room unit, we added about 3–4 pounds of R410A refrigerant, adjusting the pressure from the high side and slightly increasing it above the standard level to stabilize the system.

We also recommended a thorough cleaning of the indoor coil, as the airflow was restricted — a common reason many homeowners experience poor cooling even after a refrigerant recharge.

For the kitchen unit, we added about 1 pound of R410A, and airflow tests showed the air temperature at 55°F — normal cooling range. However, we explained to the customer that heat from the kitchen could make it feel less cool.

🧠 Professional Insight: Why Refrigerant Loss Happens

One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is that A/C refrigerant “runs out naturally.”
In reality, refrigerant doesn’t evaporate or disappear over time — if levels are low, it’s because of a leak somewhere in the system.

That’s why leak testing is so important. Refilling the gas without fixing the leak only provides a temporary fix.
